Catherine WhitakerHOST
16:23
That's how to do the end of the season.
Catherine WhitakerHOST
16:26
And Marta Kostjuk's hopes of qualifying ended in retirement for her against Ekaterina Aleksandrovna in her first match in Ningbo.
Catherine WhitakerHOST
16:36
So it was an exciting race for a while there, but did kind of... peter out because of how tough it is to go on a nightmare tour and try and pull off a last gasp qualification looking at the finals fields It's interesting, isn't it? Because at the start of the year, I don't think any of us would have been shocked if we'd been shown that field.
Catherine WhitakerHOST
17:07
The obviously one shock would have been the absence of Iga Siontek.
Rennae StubbsHOST
36:41
The women have been solidified.
Rennae StubbsHOST
36:43
The only person that could possibly have gotten through was Kostjuk.
Rennae StubbsHOST
36:45
She lost in her recent match.
Rennae StubbsHOST
36:48
And of course, Iga Shiontek.
Rennae StubbsHOST
38:34
She shut her season down as well.
Rennae StubbsHOST
38:35
She was like, you know what, fuck it.
Rennae StubbsHOST
38:37
If Eager wins and Kostjuk wins and I don't make the WTA finals, I'm good with it.
Rennae StubbsHOST
38:42
now looks really good because now she's going to be really fresh going in there.
Nigel SeeleyHOST
7:02
And Alexandra Alexandrova, after what has been a pretty disappointing year, has shown good run as well.
Nigel SeeleyHOST
7:08
Got to the quarterfinals in Ningbo, beat by Leila Fernandez, but beat Kostjuk and entered Kostjuk in the round of 16.
Nigel SeeleyHOST
7:16
Alexandra Ove has the head-to-head battle, two times they've played this year.
Nigel SeeleyHOST
7:20
She's won the most recent.
Tim DennisGUEST
9:16
So maybe that might be a little bit of a concern for her.
Tim DennisGUEST
9:18
But the other losses have also come to Miran Drava as well.
Tim DennisGUEST
9:21
And in that period, she's had wins over Linda Noskova, Diana Schneider and Kostjuk there.
Tim DennisGUEST
9:26
You mentioned that she took the first set and then Kostjuk had to retire.
Nick CarterHOST
51:10
Although, having said that, the WTA finals field is now locked.
Nick CarterHOST
51:14
after this week, because after Igor Sviantek ended her season because of this injury that she's got, Marta Kostjuk lost in Ningbo, we now have our field.
Nick CarterHOST
51:25
Elena Rabakina, Irina Sabalenka, Mira Andreeva, Jessica Pagula, Coco Goff, Alina Svitolina, Karolina Mukova, and Linda Noskova are all going to be taking part in Indian Wells.
Nick CarterHOST
51:37
And we'll have a full preview of that, um, coming up because it starts literally in two, in less than two weeks.
Kevin LawlerHOST
6:48
There are three or four things really briefly to touch on before we get straight into the previews, and I'll try to keep the show as close as I can to 30 minutes, because it's nearly 10.30 at night on Sunday, and I've work tomorrow.
Kevin LawlerHOST
7:00
Elena Svetolina broke up with Gael Monfils and the reason I mention it obviously was big news in the tennis world last week and I didn't touch on it I mentioned I haven't done any reels because my parents were here but it was huge news and I mentioned Monfils you know I basically headlined the show last week with where the hell is Gael Monfils why is he pulled out of Lyon why is he pulled out of Paris he was due to get a he was due to get a good sign off from his French fans his legion of French fans and he never showed up or he basically pulled out and no one knew what was going on well now we know what was going on I don't really know even what to say or what I want to say on this I don't love Svitolina by any stretch of the imagination I don't have much time for her I don't like the way she plays the politics card in the tennis space these days it's the same as Marta Kostiuk I don't have much time for either of those um i'm not a big pro russian head or anything like that but i just hate the double standards and the way that for example russian players have their fat their flag taken off uh for the last four years and let's say israeli athletes are free to have the israeli flag on their profile and the us players even if you wanted to go that far are totally fine to have the us flag when they're supporting what I would consider a genocide in Palestine and stuff like that.
Kevin LawlerHOST
8:19
That's as political as I've ever gotten on this show, but I just felt I needed to say something on this thing.
Kevin LawlerHOST
8:24
But I don't like the way Svitolina plays the card when she's sponsored by Palantir, among other things, and I really don't have any time for her at all.

11 MINS LATER

Kevin LawlerHOST
19:36
If she can beat Yulia Putintseva in round one, she's due to play Elena Rybakina in round two.
Kevin LawlerHOST
19:41
And Zachary is having a bit of a comeback and a bit of an old renaissance performance.
Kevin LawlerHOST
19:45
um she beat she made the finals in sorry the quarterfinals in wuhan where she lost to maya who won the tournament and in that tournament she defeated marta kostiuk who obviously you know just recently i think finished her season and was in the race for the tour finals in indian wells but obviously has lost that race but zachary's back playing okay and i'm interested in her here um Leila Fernandez is in here as well.
Kevin LawlerHOST
20:09
The difference between her and Elena Rybakina and obviously Rybakina beat her today in the final.
Finley CrebolderNARRATOR
6:31
Defending champion Yannick Sinner withdrew before the tournament due to a knee injury, and former world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas also chose to pull out.
Finley CrebolderNARRATOR
6:40
Elena Rybikina, Maja Kowalinska, and Diana Schneider will lead the lineup at the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo, which has experienced a late wave of high-profile withdrawals, including Iga Sviantek, Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina, and Marta Kostiuk.
Finley CrebolderNARRATOR
6:57
Finally, Venus Williams is the biggest headline of the WTA 250 tournament in Guangzhou, as she has been awarded wildcards into both the singles and doubles main draws.
Finley CrebolderNARRATOR
7:06
Thank you for listening.
Nigel SeeleyHOST
7:02

Alex GruskinHOST
3:50
I am recording this podcast, once again, very early Saturday morning Eastern time.
Alex GruskinHOST
3:55
That means, of course, day four of the 2026 World Tennis Tour Junior Finals, a premier event on the junior calendar that brings together eight of the best boys, eight of the best girls from across the globe, and watches them compete, not only for the prestigious crown, a crown, of course, won in the past by Rublev, Runa, Kostjuk, Kornieva, and others know it's an opportunity to compete for travel grants, an opportunity to jockey for positioning in that junior accelerator program.
Alex GruskinHOST
4:25
And of course, the accelerator program offering opportunities to compete at higher level events on the pro circuit, better facilitate your transition from high level junior to high level pro.
Alex GruskinHOST
4:36
Best of the best in action this week in Chengdu.
Dan KiernanHOST
3:55
And we have our WTA finalists on the singles side, you know, all eight are now confirmed.
Dan KiernanHOST
4:02
Igor Sviantek withdrew unfortunately so she can now not make it anymore and also Marta Kostiuk withdrew as well so it looks like we have our final eight on the double side it's still exciting actually there's still lots going on so kind of watch this space on that the final spot is absolutely up for grabs Arani and Paolini have it as it currently stands but there's other teams in the wings so it's going to be an exciting last week in Tokyo next week where I'm sure There's going to be all of those teams gunning for that final coveted spot at the WTA finals in Indian Wells.
Dan KiernanHOST
4:38
And then over in Shanghai we had again I guess Spanish domination really.
Dan KiernanHOST
4:43
We had Davidovic Fokina winning the final against Rafael Hodar in a tight three set match.
Alex GruskinHOST
19:27
as she dropped the opening set 6-4 to Katarina Alexandrova.
Alex GruskinHOST
19:30
Now it just sucks that Sviantek, and Kostiuk in particular, who in my opinion has been top 8 for 9 of the 10 months this season, that their seasons are ended by injuries, that we don't get the chase that could have been really fun between them, Muhova, down this season's homestretch, throughout these final few 500s and final few weeks of, dare I say, regular season play.
Alex GruskinHOST
19:54
Um...
Alex GruskinHOST
19:56
But look, again, like Fernandez, Alexandrova, Bailik, Bozhkova, I can get down with that here in October.
