Marshall Field III

Uh, Edward Everett was the chief speaker at the Gettysburg Exhibitary dedication, and he asked President Lincoln to create this copy for him so it could be sold at the Metropolitan Sanitary Fair in New York City to raise money for sick and wounded soldiers.

And then over the years, uh, eventually the state was able to purchase it, uh, from a private owner in 1944 with some funds that were collected by, uh, children in the State of Illinois, as well as a contribution from a Chicago businessman named Marshall Field III.

Amazing.

A- a- and I see too th- there was a press release, uh, that, uh, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, uh, put out earlier this week, and I saw one of the other things here, uh, programs from Ford's Theatre on the night of his assassination.
