But as things change for students, David says there's also a significant effect on the community.

These are board-driven decisions who think that their institution is one marketing campaign away from turning it all around, and the numbers just don't add up.

So I think what we'll see is things like Marlboro College in southeastern Vermont that merged with Emerson a few years ago.

Now we have Hampshire, Anna Maria College that are just shutting down.

And as Jill said, when these mergers come up, I think the boards and the alumni fight that because they want to see their brand survive even if that's not necessarily the best case for the mission of these institutions.
