Markham

So let's get smarting.

[upbeat music] Our first question comes from Elliot in Markham, Ontario, Canada, who wants to know, how long have humans existed? Great question, and the answer depends a little bit on what you mean by humans.

You see, according to scientists, our species, homo sapiens, have been around for about, mm, 300,000 years.

That is a really, really long time, but it's actually only a tiny fraction of Earth's history because Earth is about 4.5 billion years old.

Markham, a lot of Ontario in there.

Markham, Oshawa, Mississauga, Toronto.

Basically, Ontario and Vancouver.

I think some of that, at least it's related, must be related

felt that you feel like you spent a lot of time in and done some really decent scoring in your career we'll call it the shmup career because you've been playing for a long time let's

see because like a lot of the games i don't really have substantial scores on it but let's just say it's something that i put a lot of time into even at home and at the arcade that we had at the time when i was playing because Toronto, or specifically north of Toronto, called the Markham area, had a very famous Asian mall called Pacific Mall.

And in that arcade was an arcade called Orbit.

So a lot of the old-head arcade nerds around here would know about Orbit.

No, we were Toronto.

So like we were Markham kids and, um yeah and like the thing with like a lot of the york region suburbs is like nobody was coming to you there was no like localized scene from my experience i'm sure someone had something somewhere maybe that we weren't connected to but like we 100 had to go into toronto for everything there was nothing and even like there's a whole story too about like trying to get music going in markham that like a lot of other people could talk about maybe even a little better than me about trying to get a venue in markham the mayor got involved at one point i don't know if you remember this but the fitzpatrick incident and the diverse attraction played in markville mall to like a thousand kids moshing um and that was all part of this initiative yeah it was a whole fucking situation um but yeah markham sucked so we 100 had to go to toronto for all of our shows until we ended up finding, actually my drummer at the time, Dave Story, who like kind of is my origin story of getting into bands.

He was like, yo, we need to book our own shows.

It's the only way this is going to happen.

and Unionville and Stouffville and whatever.

I'm going to note something here for people who are curious.

Not every eligible mayor actually signed on to this.

And we've seen mayors use the strong mayor powers in unconventional or possibly unexpected ways, like an economic working group.

But here's one that's going to make you scratch your head.

We're going to turn our attention to Markham for a moment.

I'm going to give this one to you last in our review, because I think it illustrates something fundamental about a gap between the law's stated purpose and its actual operation.
