It looked like we were putting some geopolitical premium back into that market on Tuesday.

Well, I think for starters, Michelle, we saw a pretty good sell-off last week on the wheat market, which it obviously needed.

And here, I think you get down to a level you probably are starting to see the political issues continue to swell in the Middle East and in the Black Sea region, more so the Black Sea, just the movement of wheat coming out of that region.

continues to be well below a year ago levels.

I think you put that the combination of that and end users who I believe do not have very good coverage on, you're going to start seeing a little bit more of the panic start to take place here in the very near future.

So why was corn not able to follow the strength in wheat and soybeans? Is it just because the funds are already record long in that market?

Well, a couple of fold, yes.

Is that because the funds are already record long or is this just apprehension going into the WASDE on Friday?

I would say it's a little bit more of the funds have a significant long position in here.

They got a long position in meal, they got a significant long position in the soybeans, but the corn sticks out like a sore thumb on here.

I think our business has still been pretty good.

It hasn't been stellar like it has been for the soybeans.

in here.

So maybe it's just a little bit more of a lagger.

So that slows things down a bit too.

I'm Mark Schultz, co-author along with Robert Waldinger of The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness.

I'm also a professor of psychology and director of data science at Bryn Mawr College.

Our book builds on the insights of a remarkable research project, the Harvard Study of Adult Development that began in the 1930s and followed seven hundred and twenty-four individuals from adolescence to the end of their lives.

And when I say follow, I mean follow really closely.

From its very beginning, this is a study that has tried to capture the lived experience of its participants with regular interviews, open-ended questions, visits to the homes and families of participants, and observations of their interactions with loved ones.

Is this about weather, China? What's driving the market?

Well, I think for starters, obviously the weather is going to play a little bit of a forefront.

But there's three clogs in here that are helping this market out.

One, you've got the weather, which has turned a little warmer, drier, more so in the western Corn Belt than it is in the eastern Corn Belt.

It is the extended forecast that hints towards that hot, dry weather will return next week.

So that's something to watch there.

Then you've got the war in the Middle East between Iran and the US, and that continues to escalate here a little bit more.

So Mark, did corn just follow soybeans or is that market still trading weather?

War, weather, China, what else?

You got it, all three of them.

So a little bit with the weather.

warmer dryer.

I don't think you're doing any significant damage to the crop yet at the present time.

I think it's more foreseen whether this heat returns next week as it's forecasted to.

The western Corn Belt is the area that's starting to ship into the warmer dryer pattern.

Do you think corn is putting in any weather premium here because of what's been going on in the EU? Because their corn crop is getting smaller too, isn't it?

I don't know about that

... a good excuse to, like, get, uh, all the hair taken off his body, which I would like to do myself, actually.

And then he had the hairs implanted in his head.

Even when he, when he first transitioned, he had a s- bald spot right down the middle, and then afterwards it was all filled in with, uh, body hair.

That's, you can transplant body hair, and his body hair apparently was so long and gross it turned, it turned out to look, you know, fairly realistic after it was transplanted [chuckles].

What initially brought you out of retirement for this?

I get a phone call from Tadaki Haga, and Tadaki is a nat- an NCAA wrestling champion for Oklahoma State.

And on the phone call, in the conference call with Tadaki, there's also a Japanese Olympic champion who coached my brother at Oklahoma State.

His name is Jiichiro Date, and Date was...

But yes, yeah, I've had two, two people say for sure you were going over there under the guise that it was a fake fight.

Oh, okay.

And I was like, well, I think she was because I could feel that, and I just wanted to hug her and wrap her up.

And they said, she is in a state of shock right now, but she has learned by being in an orphanage, if she is cute and funny and laughs and is entertaining and you find her interesting and she is special, she will get fed and she will get taken care of and she won't get forgotten about.

And all of a sudden, this huge thing went off in my head and I went, oh my gosh, this is me.

my whole life going, if I'm special and if I'm fast enough and if I'm the quarterback and if I run track and if I win the baseball championship game and if I sing and people give me standing ovations, I will be special enough that people will pay attention to me.

And so the biggest change that came over to me is we adopt people now here on earth because God adopted us into his family.

And so it's a blueprint of that.

So having that revelation for you personally, has it changed the way you spend your time? Is it playing out in your life in some tangible ways? So here's how it

You were going into a holiday, but not a lot of bullish news, either weather and maybe the war being over.

Well, I think you're right.

We had the nice turnaround on Wednesday where we saw the markets move on higher.

It came into Thursday and looking to finish off the week, at least as far as the trading was concerned there.

It just didn't have any follow through to the upside.

So I think a little bit more stock market bounce back and then we've got the grain complex going down.

But you look around and you go on, okay, export business has been okay.

What, because we knew about it already or because the amount was pretty small?

But we are going to need to see some really big sales, not just the soybeans, but in other commodities to get this market really excited and get the funds back in here, aren't we?

Well, absolutely.

Well, for starters, the funds are back to the short side in both wheat and corn.

So that's good.

They still own a rather sizable long position.

My feeling is in both soybeans, soybean meal, and soybean oil.

So you've got to be careful.

Do you think now we can finally turn this market because the funds are still really short here?

So we have factored, you think, most bearish news into the market, including weather, or is that still going to be a headwind here for the markets?

Oh, I would say we probably got most of the bearishness into the market here for right now, as far as just flat price, as far as weather is concerned, I would still suffice.

I think it's still a little bit more on the bearish side.

Now, with that said, things can still change here.

Watch this.

I mean, we keep getting this rain as it moves forward and you're starting to see areas that are getting too wet in parts of Illinois, Missouri, into Southern portions of Iowa.

The Delta, I don't think it's that much.

Is there anything else right now that you're watching in this market? I mean, we've talked about war weather in China, and those have been kind of the big three or the trifecta, but is there anything else you're watching?

Yeah, just attack the crack, attack the crack.

You know, attacking the crotch is like a huge, it changed my entire career.

When I got fired from Stanford, I found out that the guy that fired me, the head coach of Stanford, He took my salary away and he gave it to my brother.

This was the day after I got back from becoming the only 1984 Olympic champion in the 85 worlds.

And I get back to Stanford and the coach fires me.

And I'm like, What did I do wrong? You know, he's like, I can't afford to pay you, which was a lot because he took my salary and gave it to my brother.

And I found out about this, you know, after the fact.

So I use a lot of the Greco entries and stuff to attack the crotch and the hips.

Again.

Yeah.

Referees.

I think we taught them a few things, you know, like the double wrist lock, the front headlock when you cut the corner.

And when I was, well, when I was in the Olympics, I... broke the Turk's arm with the very first move that I threw in that tournament.

And my brother had hurt the Yugoslavian, the match right before I broke the Turk's arm.

The Turk was ranked number one in the world.

There had to have been something

Was that the only reason we were down?

Uh, um, a little bit of it, but I think, uh, the other part of the, of the, uh, scale is that you had energy complex was down significantly, uh, yesterday.

Uh, quite a bit, uh, $6 lower on crude, uh, probably 18 to 20 cents lower gas and diesel.

You got on-again, off-again rhetoric coming out of the Middle East.

You don't know whether you're, you're gonna escalate or not.

We saw a couple of, uh, uh, tankers, or Chinese tankers with oil, uh, able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, so it keeps a little bit of negative.

So maybe there's some activity going on there to the positive side that things will start to open back up.

Um, was that the reason? I mean, they've been shut or dark for almost a month.

And then look at the fast planting pace that we're seeing on corn and soybeans, and the fact that weather is getting a little more favorable, not less favorable, right?

Yeah.

It's getting favorable, uh, because most of this crop is now going to be in the ground.

It looks like the heavy rains are gonna track further south into the Delta, uh, and the Ohio River Valley.

Now, that's an area that probably would entertain having more moisture, uh, because they're still pretty dry underneath.

And there too, the crop is much further along than it is up in the upper Midwest.

Uh, so they can handle the water.

We've had some frost and freeze damage in some areas, and there is some replant." So it's not completely perfect, but how isolated is that?
