Episode 27.1: Rumor to Reality
M
6:04Manton ReeceHOST
Like, the, the rumors were all right.
M
6:06Manton ReeceHOST
They even at the last minute, the Duo name was leaked, um, by Mark Gurman, and I was like, "Great, I love the name Duo." So that wasn't a surprise either.
M
6:14Manton ReeceHOST
But still, seeing how they pulled it off I, I do think they nailed it.
M
6:19Manton ReeceHOST
I mean, I haven't seen one in person, but it-
Apple’s Ternus Era Starts the iPhone Duo
E
3:06Ed LudlowHOST
What's interesting is they were basically flat, bang in line with the average of an iPhone launch day market performance that we've seen going back at least a decade.
E
3:15Ed LudlowHOST
Well, everyone's woken up and said, "This is a big deal." Let's discuss, and who better to discuss it with than Mark Gurman, who leads our Apple coverage, and basically broke most of the details prior to yesterday's event anyway.
E
3:25Ed LudlowHOST
Start with the basics, iPhone Duo.
E
3:28Ed LudlowHOST
Um, we w- we were spot on on the price.
M
7:57Mark GurmanGUEST
So it's a pretty interesting strategy.
M
8:00Mark GurmanGUEST
Uh, I do think it's going to work to some extent, but obviously, uh, it's still early innings for their AI, and, uh, there-there's more to come and there's more to do.
E
8:09Ed LudlowHOST
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who leads our coverage of Apple, but also reported so deeply on iPhone Duo, including what its name would be prior to its announcement yesterday.
E
8:18Ed LudlowHOST
Let's stick with Apple, but also we're gonna talk more about technology markets.
Bloomberg Surveillance TV: September 10th, 2026
G
19:15Gene MunsterGUEST
And what I d- what I thought going into the event, we knew what was gonna happen.
G
19:20Gene MunsterGUEST
Uh, credit Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
G
19:22Gene MunsterGUEST
I mean, just his coverage in predicting what's gonna happen is, uh, spectacular.
G
19:27Gene MunsterGUEST
So we knew about that, but I had this as probably my fourth or fifth most important topic, the foldable phone, because I just didn't think it was gonna resonate.
G
22:40Gene MunsterGUEST
But I think what I think stood out, I mean, the biggest, uh, uh, uh, event yesterday related to Ternus was even before the pre-record started, he addressed people in Steve Jobs Theater, and he did just a really good job of emphasizing the exciting excitement that he has around future products, and that's typically a well-traveled line for Apple is, "We're really excited about future products." But he said that in the midst of, uh, really downplaying what they were gonna announce yesterday, kind of focusing really on that future.
G
23:08Gene MunsterGUEST
And so from my perspective, uh, it's John Ternus is less about the foldable iPhone, more about ultimately what's gonna come.
G
23:14Gene MunsterGUEST
And go back and credit Mark Gurman here.
G
23:16Gene MunsterGUEST
Uh, just to put into perspective how good he is, is that everything that was announced yesterday, he predicted, but he's also, uh, gone out and predicted what John is gonna announce next year and even in 2028.

Doing it his first one as CEO, now we don't have to wonder, like, when is the first time Junker's going to do it? Apple shipped a folding phone, and this was rumored.
S
4:52Stephen RoblesHOST
Journalist Mark Gurman has been talking about this for months.
S
4:55Stephen RoblesHOST
All the rumors were correct.
S
4:57Stephen RoblesHOST
It's the two-camera phone, titanium, the hinge.

for context, estimates are that, these are like analyst estimates, is that Apple could sell roughly 10 million of them.
J
32:25Jason AtenHOST
Okay.
J
32:25Jason AtenHOST
Now, Apple also has said that they're going to be, well, the reporting from Mark Gurman is that they're going to be supply constrained.
J
32:31Jason AtenHOST
So they may not sell 10 million of them.

when they selected him as CEO.
A
19:55Adrian WecklerHOST
It seems almost greedy to look ahead and say, where do we go from here? But give shout out, we all owe Bloomberg's Mark Gurman quite a debt for being the oracle who has the supply chain leaks.
A
20:09Adrian WecklerHOST
I don't know how he does it.
A
20:09Adrian WecklerHOST
But A lot of us are informed ahead of the event as to what is coming.
B

Apple will place some bets.
B
20:54Ben WoodGUEST
I think the home is still an area they haven't made a big push into.
B
20:57Ben WoodGUEST
And that's one that, again, I think Mark Gurman has made some nods in that direction.
B
21:03Ben WoodGUEST
But I never lose sight of the fact that it is the iPhone that's a cash cow.

And now, that's obviously not the case.
A

Now, from, you know, our colleague, Mark Gurman, who has done some reporting on it, basically is Down the road, Siri is going to be so sophisticated that you can ask Siri to pick whichever model you want down the road.
A
24:52Anurag RanaHOST
Or for that matter, you can do it in the back end.
A
24:54Anurag RanaHOST
Are these companies building an infrastructure where the models are fungible? Or will they have to go back and now redo the whole thing again if, you know, let's say another company, their frontier model is just so much better than the one that they are using right now?

D
60:38D. Griffin JonesHOST
I don't think we were really expecting new AirPods until like a month ago when Mark Gurman said that AirPods 5 are coming.
D
60:47Devon DundeeGUEST
Yeah, and he had mentioned possibly the H3 chip, which I thought would have been weird to introduce in base model AirPods instead of the Pros.
D
60:55Devon DundeeGUEST
And I'm glad that it ended up being the H2 chip just because I'm on AirPods Pro 3 and I prefer not to have to upgrade them anytime too terribly soon.

It's going to take all the information and give you an estimate of your health age and how it compares to your biological age and kind of how you're doing in terms of where your body should is the wrong word, but kind of medical consensus, I guess, of how things are going.
D
75:32Devon DundeeGUEST
All of this together sounds to me a lot like the health and fitness subscription that Mark Gurman had been rumoring for a couple years that Apple was building, even going so far as I think they've hired doctors to make informational videos that go along with some of these insights, which is great because you don't want to just get your phone telling you, oh, yeah, you're like 10 years older than you should be.

The surprise is that it's as nicely done as it is, and it addresses many of the complaints about these phones.
