Mark Clifford

How Jimmy Lai became a billionaire, Hong Kong's greatest dissident and China's most feared critic.

I welcome the author and publisher and editor, Mark Clifford, who takes us into the world of China.

during and right after the revolution and the birth of a man we now remember as Jimmy Lai.

At the time, he's born in the Pearl River Basin.

It was a story of liberation.

The book is The Troublemaker.

Mark Clifford is the author.

How Jimmy Lai became a billionaire.

[gentle music] Hello, welcome to "Into Asia." I'm your host, Ian Buruma, and my co-host in Tokyo is Chang Che.

And we're very pleased to talk today to Mark Clifford, who's a distinguished journalist, author of "The Troublemaker," a biography of Jimmy Lai, the newspaper mogul in Hong Kong, and businessman who's in prison for at least 20 years, probably for, uh, many alleged crimes.

One of them is conspiracy to collude with foreign forces.

Mark is also president of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation.

What does that, what does that process like? And like, what is like the mind shift?

I got brought into titles by Mark, um, it's been like his brainchild.

Um, Mark Clifford, he owns a dealer departed in Milford.

He's a tattoo artist, amazing artist.

And like, he was coming to shows, um, at the Fillmore and we met through, through that.
