The process to get tenure includes external reviews from a professor's peers at other universities.

Mark Button, executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer for UNL, knows tenure is important for both the university and the community

They're taking informed intellectual risks, working at the cutting edge of their fields, and it's in that environment of exploration and of discovery that faculty really have the opportunity to inspire and to mentor the future generations of engineers and artists and business leaders and future teachers

Button pointed to a robotically assisted surgery device that faculty started working on in 2001 as a key example of the stability that stems from a tenured professorship.
