He says a typical 30-year-old today has about five hours of leisure time a day but spends only seven minutes of that time actually reading.

Wow.

Because knowledge is being merely downloaded by this generation rather than being earned through patient study and friction.

Yes.

Mark Bauerlein notes that this dynamic creates what he calls a bubble of adolescence.

Although the center's full advisory council includes 26 members, half whom are out-of-state faculty from the likes of Stanford, Princeton, George Mason University, and the University of Chicago, next week's meeting is just the nine-member executive committee.

Its membership, which is majority non-Iowa faculty, faculty includes Chair Richard Lowry, Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Texas at Austin, Mark Bauerlein, Professor Emeritus of English at Emory University, Joshua Rao, Finance Professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Ivan Maranovic, Associate Professor of Accounting at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Thomas Galanis, Law Professor at George Mason University, Mike Whalen, President and CEO of Heart of America Group, former U.S. Representative Greg Ganske, UI Vice President for External Relations Peter Mathis, and Hensley.

Beyond center governance and leadership, the committee at its meeting next week will discuss a speaker series for this fall semester, along with initiatives supporting that effort.
