But researchers say they may be winding up on the streets instead.

CalMatters reporter Marisa Kendall has the details.

The PPIC is

reporting Proposition 47 likely led to an estimated increase in street homelessness of about 10 percent between 2015 and 2019.

Researchers also found evidence that Prop 47 led to a 20% reduction in the number of Californians receiving drug treatment because the courts referred fewer people into treatment programs after it passed.

While the researchers couldn't determine exactly why homelessness increased, the study's lead author told me it's likely a result of a combination of increased drug use and people who used to be sleeping in jails now sleeping on the street instead.

The Trump administration wants to overhaul Head Start, an early education and anti-poverty program that serves about 75,000 children here in California.

That includes a twenty-six percent drop last year in Colusa, Glen, and Trinity Counties combined.

This year, as we're starting to see some of the preliminary results from the twenty twenty-six homeless point-in-time counts, uh, many California counties are again reporting progress.

Uh, San Joaquin County, for example, reduced the number of homeless people throughout the entire county by nearly a third.

And officials in every county I talked to said that, you know, they've added more shelter beds, more permanent housing placements, um, and they said that's because of new funding that Governor Gavin Newsom has put into homelessness starting in twenty nineteen.

Um, and now we're finally starting to actually see some of the fruits of that investment.
