Marion County Public Health hosted a Healthy Hometowns roundtable on Wednesday to talk about the county's initiative to combat cancer.

The initiative works to encourage prevention efforts and increase screenings and education specifically in rural communities.

Iowa was awarded roughly $209 million in the first year of the Rural Health Transformation Program.

We have an opportunity to help more Iowans.

said Dr. Robert Kruse, State Medical Director and Division Director of Public Health.

Marion County Public Health was selected to lead the Combat Cancer Initiative and is partnering with 66 public health agencies serving 96 counties across Iowa.

Lindsay Spolstra, Marion County Public Health Director, said that the most encouraging part of the program so far is is the public health participation.
