Marine Corps University

A little bit of writing, not quite as much.

I do have a, a short story that's gonna be coming out as part of a collection on artificial intelligence and logistics that Marine Corps University is gonna be publishing, I think later this year.

Uh, it's actually being wr- um, organized by one of, uh, Krulak Center's former, uh, non-resident fellows, um, who asked me, "Would you like to contribute to a book about AI and logistics?" And I said, "Sure, but I don't know anything about AI or logistics." Uh, but I said, "I can make stuff up in a story if you want me to." So that's what we went with.

Um, but other- but otherwise, it's, I, you know, it's interesting.

And not just the OODA loop stuff, but a lot of his other ideas in terms of strategic thinking, in terms of building those relationships between organizations, whether it's militaries or entire countries, and thinking through how you want a conflict to look at the end rather than just sort of flailing around to get into it and not really thinking about how you get out of it.

The world needs a lot more Boyd, and I hope the book provides a little bit of a jumping off point for that.

But I don't actually wanna overcomplicate this because I am confident that anyone who is technical at CDAO, at headquarters Marine Corps, at SDO, at DCI, at the Marine Corps Software Factory, at NPS, at Marine Corps University, at Training and Education Command, I am confident that any of them that understands how to develop software can build that solution in one weekend.

And I say that because I know I could build it in one hour.

And that is something that can be bolted right on to genai.mil because you're gonna use the exact same authentication.

Uh, Colonel Catlin is also a third-degree black belt instructor trainer in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, and an accomplished scholar.

He holds a PhD from Virginia Tech and graduate degrees from the National War College, Marine Corps University, and National University.

His newest book, Strategic Culture, Military Adaptation, and the Information Environment: A Comparative, uh, it examine how the United States, China, Russia, and the United Kingdom have adapted to an information environment increasingly blurring the boundaries among military operation, political authority, technology, and society.

But perhaps his most provocative argument is captured in these three words: ethics wins war.

He has commanded at multiple levels, including Marine Wing Support Squadron 273, the 6th Marine Corps District, Marine Corps Recruiting Command, and Marine Corps Installations Pacific.

He has also held senior institutional and joint assignments, including service on the joint staff at the National War College and as president of Marine Corps University and commanding general of Education Command.

In his current role, he oversees manpower, personnel, and reserve affairs for the Marine Corps.

helping shape how the service recruits, develops, and sustains its force.

Uh, before joining The Connecticut Forum, you were campaign chief of staff and VP of corporate and foundation relations at the Connecticut Children's Foundation.

You've also held senior roles at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, American University, and the Marine Corps University Foundation.

With a resume like that, what made you consider a position at The Connecticut Forum?

Uh, thanks, Bobby, and thanks again for having me on.

Uh, I focus on the development part, on, on identifying resources and pursuing those resources on behalf of my nonprofit organization, and in particular, enjoying working on scholarship, getting the best ideas out to the world.

Uh, that has, uh, worked, um...

I've worked in several different areas in that respect, so at a think tank, CSIS, which is the largest think tank in the world at present, at American University, um, in support of Marine Corps University and Marine Corps University Foundation, and most recently at, uh, Connecticut Children's, where, uh, a number of scholar physicians are working to address the great challenges of our time with respect to chronic diseases for children.

Um, and then this opportunity popped up with The Connecticut Forum to be able to convene thought leaders, artists, cultural icons, people who have, uh, really either led the world, led their, uh, countries, led their particular, um, uh, uh, instruments or, um, theater and stage, and having them come to our stage here in Hartford and sharing their views on a number of issues.
