But see, Marcionism is a very persistent heresy.

Whenever today you hear people say, I hate the God of the Old Testament, he's cruel and violent.

I like the God of Jesus, the New Testament.

That's a neo-Marcionism.

And the church in ancient times and now has always to say no to Marcionism because we will miss Jesus if we go down that road.

And then I-- as we were talking, I was reminded of another ancient heresy called Marcionism that wanted to kind of reject the Old Testament.

Uh, actually, in Marcionism, the God of the Old Testament was a different deity, and he was evil and, you know- ... petty and all these things, and then Jesus is the God of the New Testament.

But you see some flavors of those things.

So it's interesting that you kinda see Gnosticism popping up, you see Marcionism popping up, um, and you see those in progressivism as well.

It's-

But that's why it's weird, like, it's weird that part- Catholics in particular-

Allow even that.

When after the apostles heresies had burst forth, and were striving under various names to tear piecemeal and divide the dove and the queen of God, did not the apostolic people require a name of their own, whereby to mark the unity of the people that were uncorrupted, lest the error of some should rend limb by limb the undefiled virgin of God? Was it not seemly that the chief head should be distinguished by its own peculiar appellation? Suppose this very day I entered a populous city, when I had found Marcionites, Apollinarians, Cataphrygians, Novatians, and others of the kind who call themselves Christians, by what name should I recognize the congregation of my own people, unless it were named Catholic? Come, tell me, who bestowed so many names on the other peoples? Why have so many cities, so many nations, each their own description? The man who asks the meaning of the Catholic name, will he be ignorant himself of the cause of his own name if I shall inquire its origin? Whence was it delivered to me? Certainly that which has stood through so many ages was not borrowed from man.

This name Catholic sounds not of Marcion, nor of Apelles, nor of Montanus, nor does it take heretics as its authors.

Many things the Holy Spirit hath taught us, whom God sent from heaven to the apostles as their Comforter and Guide.

In fact, one of the things we highlight on my channel is the absolute 100% continuity between the Old and the New Testament.

If you read, for example, even the Gospel of John... which many Gnostics and Marcionites would appeal to to supposedly prove this discontinuity.

All throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus is consistently referring to Old Testament examples, the Old Testament God as his father, the Passover, the Moses wrote about me, everything in Moses and Abraham's life is me meeting with Abraham before Abraham was I am.

Jesus is the God of the Old Testament.

You get the idea.

Same stuff.

We'll do a couple more, but he gets into Marcion, the Marcionites, the Ophites who worship, the Ophites worship the serpent So some of these people are actually like literal Satanists, right? Sorinthus, another Egyptian Gnostic.

The world was not made by God, but by a fallen power.

revealed in the New Testament.

And there was a heresy called Marcionism that actually abandoned the Old Testament and said, that's a different God than the one revealed to us by Jesus.

And of course, we see a continuity.

Christians have always seen a continuity in God's self-revelation from the beginning of creation to the present.

And so it's actually named after him.

So it's called Marcionism, named after its discoverer or the guy who came up with it, the guy by the name of Marcion.

And so what he believed, now Marcion was a church official.

He was actually the son of a bishop.

And we'll come to Gnosticism in a moment.

And so he kind of fell under this teaching and kind of took it in his own direction.

What came to define Marcionism was the idea that the God of the Old Testament was different to the God of the New Testament.

And it starts from a very simplistic reading of of the old testament which is that god is the god of the old testament is an angry vindictive god and yet the god that's represented in christ is a merciful god a god that extends grace and so he looks at that and says they can't be the same god there's just no way that these two gods are the same and so therefore the the god of the old testament must be incorrect.

Bishop Markion saw the Old Testament demiurge as cruel.

Jesus, 100% spirit, he cut all Old Testament and only left Luke and Paul, no marriage, sex, meat as a follower, called Markcionite church with the thing.

I'm like a semi-Marcionite who thought that the Jews called Yahweh, what the Jews called Yahweh is an evil spirit or something.

And Jesus was like, hey, let's go a different direction.
