Marc Guggenheim

So Green Lantern was released in 2011, specifically at the Chinese Theatre June 15th, 2011, and wide release June 17th, 2011.

It is directed by Martin Campbell of 007 fame, and with a screenplay by Greg Berlanti and a few others, Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green, Michael Goldenberg.

And then of course it does star Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins.

So Joe, I, I know this, um, this movie has a, has a reputation.

Oh, in, um, in Jedi Nights by Mark Guggenheim.

And so we would start talking about it.

And Marc Guggenheim is one of the-

They'll bring in a completely new person.

There's also that, you know, the fact that Mark Guggenheim has mentioned that he and Greg Berlanti pitched to HBO a more traditional Green Lantern kind of show along the lines of what happens in the comics.

And it was rejected because HBO themselves wanted the true detective angle.

Um, so there's that load of people who are probably out there going, oh, this could have been

Some of them knew comics better than others.

You know, Mark Guggenheim wrote comics, so he knew comics very well on Arrow.

um you know and but finding the best ways to get the fans of that particular comic to rally behind the show and so like sometimes if it was the arrowverse shows it was suggesting characters and uh you know you know i remember like very early on um i think it was like the third episode of uh of Arrow where they meet Deadshot.

And I think an early script, an early cut, like Arrow kills Deadshot.

And it's only been three episodes.

So it really started when you were – probably in europe and everything

Now, I know the real reason is, as I understand it, it was always going to be a lantern show that before even Gunn took over.

This was supposed to be Mark Guggenheim and Greg Berger.

and they wanted and they told them no no no go low on your budget grounded gritty true detective but this just doesn't let every single time they could have shown us something like shown how reveal himself to the world and stop the meteor or in the second one shown what john was being shown they just tell us do you see how it feels same thing yeah because it drags out the mystery though you could have done a question show if you wanted a detective grounded gritty not cosmic space cops

The telling and not showing allows them to drag the mystery box even longer because now we get to, we go week to week of wondering, well, what was in like the mind gun imprint that the not atrocity, Timu atrocities was using on Jon Stewart, right? Because now we get to talk like, what was it? And what's really funny there is you have, oh, here's this group of aliens that all look human and they're hunting the manhunter.

Season two of Arrow was fucking cool.

But yeah, season three was like, okay.

And then after that, yeah, Mark Guggenheim didn't give a fuck.

A lot of people don't know how bad it was because he

I was not expecting that.

Uh, I did not realize that Marc Guggenheim had it in him to be able to write with that psychological power.

Uh, this TV show, I did a little digging, half-ass internet research as they say on that other show.

Uh, this show originally started with Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, uh, during the Arrowverse.

He started developing a Green Lantern show in 2019.

Hmm.

And then they take out all the context of what made it work in the comic.

And then people go, "Well, you know what happened in the comics." Uh, why do this show? Now, the answer to that is clearly this is HBO that wanted it to be True Detective, because we heard even when it was with Craig BerlantI and Marc Guggenheim they wanted to do cosmic.

And HBO was like, "No, no, no.

More True Detective."
