Can you explain the situation?

Yeah.

UNRWA is different from other UN agencies in that it runs, it essentially runs in Gaza, let's say, where there are 2 million people following October 7th.

It ran a school system for half of the population of young people.

It ran a health sector across Gaza.

It was essentially a ministry of health, a ministry of education, a ministry of civic planning.

It was essentially a quasi-governmental organization in Gaza because of a number of things, because there were so many needs of this population that again, did not have autonomy, did not have their own country.

What was the pretext for the administration's pause in the contributions? Why did they say that this needed to be looked at?

[laughs]

And, and so these were just these moments of, again, kind of us coming together in some of the mythology we think we know about each other, and breaking that down.

That experience was very formative, and the, there was an amazing principal of that school, Fawzia Madfa, who was just as open and warm and wonderful as, as so many people I met in Syria.

So it had a profound effect on me.

And I knew the person who headed UNRWA Syria, a, a Dutch gentleman, Lex Takkenberg, who I know, uh, and care for to this day.

And then just UNRWA means so much, I came to learn, to the, uh, the Palestinian people.

Because UNRWA provided, number one, a world-class education to, uh, Palestinian refugees who, yes, they were treated much better in Syria than other settings, but did not have access, either through poverty or lack of nationality in many of the settings they were, or because they were in Palestine occupied by Israel.
