But it never saw the light.

His attempts to get it published were unsuccessful, and at last, in a fit of irritation and despair, the young author burned the manuscript.

There is probably something autobiographic in the striking little tale of The Devil and the Manuscript.

Quote, "They have been offered to 17 publishers," says the hero of that sketch in regard to a pile of his own lucubrations.

Out of the past, phantoms of a world gone by speak again the immortal tale, Dr. Manette's Manuscript.

Gentlemen of the jury, I have in my hand a manuscript that Dr. Alex Manette unearthed on the night of February 12th, 1751. a manuscript that will provide conclusive proof of the guilt of Charles St. Evremonde, accusing him of fraud, murder, and conspiracy.

A chain of fantastic events lead to Dr. Manette's finding of the manuscript, and I should like to describe these events to you now.

If people want to know more about CSNTM, how would they do that?

The materials for this work have chiefly been obtained in the Printed Books Department of the British Museum, but I have also made use of a number of other libraries.

i owe many thanks to professor seward f r s who suggested that i should undertake this book and gave me special facilities for the study of the fine collection of old botanical works in the botany school cambridge In addition, I must record my gratitude to the University Librarian, Mr. F.J.H. Jenkinson, M.A., and Mr. C.E. in a recent newspaper controversy about the conventional silliness and sameness of all the human generations previous to our own somebody said that in the world of jane austen a lady was expected to faint when she received a proposal to those who happen to have read any of the works by jane austen the connection of ideas will appear slightly comic elizabeth bennett for instance received two proposals from two very confident and even masterful admirers and she certainly did not faint it would be nearer the truth to say that they did but in any case it may be amusing to those who are thus amused, and perhaps even instructive to those who thus need to be instructed, to know that the earliest work of Jane Austen, here published for the first time, might be called a satire on the fable of the fainting lady.

Beware of fainting fits, though at times they may be refreshing and agreeable.
