Mantou

Then there's one more thing that Zhuge Liang gets credit for.

He supposedly invented mantou.

Mantou is a kind of steamed wheat bread, sort of like a bun.

You can get it all over China, but it's mostly a northern Chinese thing.

Mantou and baozi are sometimes used interchangeably, but my understanding is that a baozi is just some mantou with meat or vegetable filling.

As the story goes, in 225, Zhuge Liang led his Shu Han troops during the southern campaign that sought to subdue the breakaway lands around Yunnan.

The one facing off against Zhuge Liang down there was named Meng Hua.

And they'll put their betting number down.

I strike my betting number with Mantou.

We'll pour oil on the phone.
