Mantis shrimp

Our final story dives into the ocean

to meet the mantis shrimp, an animal famous for incredible eyes.

Mantis shrimp are not the same as the shrimp you might see on a dinner plate.

They are colorful ocean animals, and scientists have long been fascinated by how they see the world.

Their eyes can detect kinds of light and detail in ways that are very different from human eyes.

In a detailed scan of a whole mantis shrimp eye, researchers reported a tiny tube network that had not been described before.

A scan is a way to look closely at the inside of something, a little like making a map of hidden structures.

Scientists do not yet have every answer about what this tube network does.

... [laughs] there's a creature called a, a shrimp.

What is that? A mantis shrimp-

Mm-hmm

... that has way more cones in its eyes than humans do.

Yeah.

To him.

To this mantis shrimp.

Yeah.
