If, like me, you go hiking along the banks of your local river, at some point you might pass a small dam, maybe a couple of meters high, with water rushing through.

There are thousands of these barely noticeable structures across Canada, remnants from an era before electricity, when water wheels were the main way of powering mills and other industries.
