That's pretty fair.

And in fact, a lot of people try to put their records of this game on MAME cabinets.

So there you go.

We'll talk about that a little later, too.

But it's also hard to tell, too, because when people are testing these things, like, if they're testing it on new technology and they're not limiting it to, like... what the actual board would have been capable of, then they're not going to hit a kill screen, right?

Yeah, yeah.

It's like maybe if there's a software kill screen, but if there's like a hardware issue, like MAME's probably not going to emulate that.

Maybe, I don't know.

The best you can do is either re-engineer the game and hope that you get all of the nuance right or get a dump of the ROM.

And then write your own emulation wrapper for it and hope that the performance is going to be on par with or exceeds something like MAME or RetroArch like Mark's ShmupArch custom version with run ahead and all this stuff for maximum latency reduction and all of that.

Yeah, if we're getting to that territory, then why not Futari? Unless they've got plans for that and we're just not aware.

But Futari seems like a big hit.

Raiden 2 has been heavily tested, though Raiden DX has only been lightly tested.

At this time, the cores are a manual install process, and the ROM files must be sourced individually for the games.

They're a custom repackage of ROM image data and not part of the standard MAME set.

And it is not clear yet when or if this core will appear in update all.

Oh.

And it's also, I think it's one of these things where at least in the research that I'm aware of, so like I, I have this wonderful colleague, um, Chris Erickson, um, in my research center who did research with the MAME community.

So should we kick off with the first game, Knights of the Round? Because this is an interesting one in that I only really knew about this, and I'm ashamed to say it, but in the era of when we were able to emulate arcade games on things like MAME, Yeah.

Because I never saw it within an arcade growing up.

So I'd love to kind of hear about your experiences and the background around this game.

Um, which is fucking brilliant and mental, and it's the one I put the most effort into.

It's the mo- Yeah, when, if you get MAME, it's like, right, first, Armed Police Batrider.

Batrider.

Just shoot a fuck load of stuff.

i had the nes version okay um so we i played a bit of sky shark on nes uh but the nes cart just says taito on it so i just assumed it was taito and it was many years later when the um When I started messing around with arcade emulation with MAME and, you know, I was just downloading whatever games looked familiar to me, like whatever titles were familiar.

And so I grabbed Skyshark because I had the NES version.

And it said Toaplan on the front.

I was going to correct you and say, actually, the game isn't called Snow Brothers 2.

It's called Snow Brothers 2 With New Elves.

Yeah, which I always whenever I would see it in MAME, I would always misread it as With New Elvis.

I don't know if you've seen the character select screen on Snow Brothers 2 with new elves, but I've shared it with you in the signal.

So it's a little bit different.

I know that if you see this game in MAME, you may think it's a light gun game, but it's not.

It's a joystick game that allows you to move a target on the screen and hit a button to fire.

And I think the reason for that, Tim, was because the seat moves.

It's called, it's RetroPie's couple of pieces of software and it can literally run all the emulators.

MAME, Daphne, all of them could run on this thing.

And so I was looking to set it up and wondering how hard it'd be to set up.

And to get it initially set up and working was actually really easy.

They actually have an image you could download, put it right on the SD card, pop it in, and it's working.

It just gives you the whole image and everything.

Now, configuring it is a little bit more because, I mean, you know, just like configuring MAME just by itself is sometimes a little bit of an effort.

You know, you have to go into each game, figure out what controllers work, all that stuff.

Battle Outrun, Outrun Europa, which I've never played.

Outrunners, I did play briefly earlier on on MAME.

Yeah.

And then there's Outrun 2019 on the Mega Drive, which I played a little bit of about a week ago for the first time ever.

Yeah.

A bit.

The version I've got on MAME is two-player split screen.

Yes.

I think it deserves.

Also, I'm a big MAME fan.

So I was playing MAME like end to end everything back in the day and figuring out new shmups every day.

And people were like talking about Ikaruga, Gradius.

And don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of both, but there's much more about it.

So I said, instead of showing old stuff, why don't I focus on the new stuff? that maybe people don't have access yet, they didn't heard about it yet.

So that's how I transitioned from one segment to another.

People still ask me to do the recommendations because they still want to see what I'm playing on MAME, now on MiSTer, but they want to hear about it.
