Can you tell me about Grace?

Yeah, and Grace, it is a wonderful story, and there's so many Graces out there, and I share a critical few in the book, but yeah, Grace, so in 2011, the Brand Saver decided that the Children Save Drinking Water program could be the cause, and we had learned that if you, you know, the Brand Saver was coupon book because they go in their Sunday paper, and at the time, they reached 50 million households, so the penetration was huge, and you get high-discount coupons for Tide or Pantene or and shoulders yeah and so there's a massive massive opportunity for the children's safe drinking water program samantha sock miller was the the png brand saver yeah um brand manager and so she really wanted to help and so she's the one who made this happen we needed assets for the for the for the story we needed photos a story and so i suggested world vision uh not knowing the time that i would eventually move to world vision but they did such great work And we went to a place in Malindi, Kenya, which is very arid.

And so there's people typically when it's arid have the worst water sources.

We went to the village looking for the story.

What, what

happens? So I left Uganda and went back to Nairobi and yeah, went down to the coast to Mombasa and then up to towns Malindi and Lamu, and then took a boat from Mombasa to Mumbai, India, went up to Kathmandu, Nepal, and came back overland to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, down the Black Sea to Istanbul, Amsterdam, London, and home.

So in my gap year, I traveled 25,000 miles I went to 15 countries, three continents for less than a thousand dollars at the

time.

The settlements here are connected to a maritime culture that has developed over many centuries along the shores and islands of East Africa.

Towns such as Kilwa, Mombasa, Malindi, and others have grown through their positions within the wider Indian Ocean network.

Ships arrive carrying goods from Arabia, India, and other regions, while commodities from the African interior make their way toward the coast.

The sea is again doing what it has done for generations, bringing distant communities into contact without requiring them to become anything like one another.

But why?

And then last year I was at a friend's 40th birthday party in Malindi, and we were just talking about friendships.

And I was hanging out with these, these women who are just so dope, and they have money, and they're just, like, so amazing.

And I was, like-

The Chinese build a depot at Malacca, a warehouse with a garrison attached, and every fleet after that stops there on the way to India and beyond.

Over seven voyages, the ships reach Hormuz, Aden, Mogadishu, and Malindi on the Kenyan coast.

But back in China, there's a fight over the money.

when you are, sometimes back when going to Lamo, even from Malindi area, you needed to take a police escort to take you to the place.

But even after now, sometimes they put, they introduce curfew.

You don't just go in the place unless they really know you.

Once it flows for about 80 miles in a northerly direction until it joins the Athi River about 7 miles below Tsavo Station.

From this point the united streams take the name of Sabaki and flow more or less eastwards until they reach the Indian Ocean at Malindi, some 70 miles north of Mombasa.

A narrow and torturous Maasai warpath winds along its whole length, but although we followed this trail our journey was nevertheless a very slow one, owing to the overhanging branches and creepers from which we had constantly to be disengaged.

The march was full of interest, however, for it was not long before we came upon fresh tracks of both hippo and rhino.
