Malcolm Brodie

And so many people are still in the dark and others are quite alarmed about the situation.

That is the voice of outgoing Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

And he was speaking to me on October 25th, one year ago, about a B.C. Supreme Court decision for the Cowagin Nation, an Aboriginal title claim to a piece of shoreline land in the city of Richmond.

Now, that ruling sparked headlines and fears about the potential impact on private property rights.

Rob Howard! Rob Howard won the mayoral race with more than 34% of the vote, just barely eking out a victory over Councillor Alexa Liu.

The former councillor and BC Liberal MLA was endorsed by former mayor Malcolm Brodie, who opted not to run again after 25 years in the role.

Howard is pledging to bring transparency to City Hall.

One of the key things in our platform is an external value for dollar review.

Whereas in Richmond, a city kind of inexperienced with democracy at the mayoral level, nevertheless had a fair amount of engagement.

And Rob Howard, the former MLA, has won there with Malcolm Brodie, the former mayor's endorsement.

Four incumbent councillors were re-elected.

However, Rob Howard will be joined by zero of his Richmond forward slate.

Here's, uh, Rob Howard, um, uh, up against Kash Heed.

As you know, um, uh, Malcolm Brodie, uh, the incumbent mayor, uh, is not running this time, so it's wide open.

But here's Rob Howard and Kash Heed from last week's debate getting into a sparring match over the gift card scandal.

Take a listen.

We're just, uh, going through some of the tighter races, uh, in Metro Vancouver.

Uh, now we've talked a little bit about Richmond.

We know Malcolm Brodie's, uh, stepping away, and this is after nearly 25 years.

We got Alexa Loo, Rob Howard, Kash Heed, um, a- and many others, um, as well, uh, running, uh, in that community.

Here's, uh, Rob Howard, um, uh, up against Kash Heed.

As you know, d- um, uh, Malcolm Brodie, uh, the incumbent mayor, uh, is not running this time, so it's wide open.

Take a listen.

Very, very tight, apparently.

See, th- this, this race is important because it's the first mayor not named Malcolm Brodie in the last 20-plus years.

So that heralds a new era for Richmond, so that's a good one.

Um, Delta, bit of a grudge match.

For the first time in 25 years, Richmond will have a new mayor.

Long-serving mayor, Malcolm Brodie, is retiring from politics, and that's making for a lively contest to replace him.

As Taya Fast reports, some of the top contenders didn't hold back during today's debate on CKNW.

For the first time in a quarter century, Richmond's mayoral race is wide open, and four of the seven candidates sat down to talk about key issues within the city.

And finally, long-term Burnaby MLA and city councilor Richard Lee is running a full slate of council candidates under the new Burnaby Party banner, and all are trying to defeat the Burnaby Citizens Association.

And finally, back over the river in Richmond, uh, 25 years of Malcolm Brodie as mayor has come to an end.

He's retiring.

So seven people have stepped up, uh, to replace Brodie, including two sitting city councilors and one former MLA.
