Maids Moreton

The Supreme Court is considering a complex legal question in the case of Benjamin Field, whose murder conviction was overturned earlier this year.

Field was jailed for 36 years in 2019 for murdering Peter Farquhar, a retired university lecturer in Maids Moreton in Buckinghamshire.

Prosecutors said he plied his victim with potentially spiked whiskey, but there was no evidence that he forced Mr. Farquhar to drink it.

The case could have implications for victims of domestic abuse, as our home and legal correspondent, Dominic Casciani, explains.

Benjamin Field's conviction for Peter Farquhar's murder in the Buckingham village of Maids Moreton was one of the most high-profile trials of the last decade.

The former deputy church warden was accused of an elaborate plan of encouraging the 69-year-old to drink himself to death and make off with his wealth.

But in April, the Courts of Appeal said the Supreme Court should consider the law concerning when someone can be said to have caused such a death.
