Magnolia West High School

I coached at Willis when I first started my career, and that defensive coach would teach our guys to shoot gaps, but it was out of control shooting gaps.

And so I remember we played Magnolia West, and they ran trap on us for about 350 yards.

And when they pulled that guard, the guard didn't even kick out you know the the defense he just went up on the linebacker because that guy was shooting the gap so hard he was running past the the lineman and past the running back which kind of happens here if you watch so you'll see i i stopped the film to keep it short but they shift and then they're going to slant to your right, and they bring that nickel back around to kind of set that edge, but unfortunately, they left a huge gap there, and the guy that should have made the tackle was that defensive end, but you can see he flies in there out of control, and Lacey's able to get around him, and then zero takes a terrible angle on top of that, but My point of this film was they are going to shoot gaps, and I feel like we should run more gap schemes instead of zone schemes.

And they do get out of control when they get in the backfield.

And we've talked about this along, just to go back to that game at Willis.

We've talked about adapting what your kids can do well to your game plan, not necessarily your game plan to the kids.

The head coach at Magnolia West at that time was a guy named Sean Bell that played quarterback at Baylor and I believe is either at Tech or U of H now.

I can't remember which one he's at, but I think he's coaching Connor down there at U of H, if I'm not mistaken.

And so he is...

I invited him to come down to an event called MAG West, which is, if you've heard of MAG Fest, that's a big East Coast event.

It's been going on for 20 years or so.

But they branched out to the West Coast, and they chose San Jose as the location for it.
