Magnificent Seven cemeteries

The solution was a series of large, privately operated cemeteries built beyond the most congested part of the city.

Seven of these Victorian burial grounds would eventually become known as London's Magnificent Seven.

Highgate was among the most prestigious.

Its original Western Cemetery was developed by the London Cemetery Company, founded in 1836 by the architect and engineer Stephen Geary.
