Magisterium

First, we must strive to engage all the many truths revealed by God through His Church.

This includes the truths contained in Holy Scripture, the teachings offered by the Magisterium, the revelations from the lives of the saints, and the theological discourses that seek to clarify and deepen our understanding.

These precious gifts given through the Church reveal to us the mysteries of God.

But the mind is also capable of receiving direct infusion from God.

Well, it's an excellent question.

Catholic social teaching of the church comes from a very long tradition, primarily starting with Pope Leo XIII, in which various popes during the years have attempted to deal with pressing issues and tried to deal with those contemporary issues by looking at the gospel, looking at teachings of the Magisterium and tried to present to the faithful and to the world what those specific teachings should be that could be very helpful as the Christian, as the Catholic attempts to make his or her way through the challenges of living in contemporary society.

So this being the fourth edition of this particular work, and I've been familiar with this work for some time now, I want to ask you, what was your thought process in putting out this version of the work, a concise guide to Catholic social doctrine? What was on your heart? What were you noticing? And therefore, why did you see the need for this?

Well, I've always had a personal interest in social doctrine and social teaching of the church and social justice.

He's the author, most recently, of this fourth edition, A Concise Guide to Catholic Social Teaching, published by Ave Maria Press.

I greatly encourage everyone watching, listening, to do get a copy of at least this book.

The other book I actually greatly recommend is a compendium of Catholic social doctrine that was put out by the church herself, the Magisterium.

But Even as I say this, I'm aware that it's a reference book, and it's difficult to imagine powering through the entire book cover to cover.

But if they express themselves in writing, then they've had time to consider what they're going to say, and their responsibilities for teaching Catholic doctrine mean that we should at least start by assuming that What they have written is a permitted Catholic opinion.

As I point out in my book, Teaching with Authority, members of the Magisterium may express theological opinions, and these generally may be presumed legitimate.

Bishops in communion with the Pope are commissioned to teach the faith and are guided by the Holy Spirit.

One could not seriously maintain that theological opinions expressed by bishops and the Pope should be presumed illegitimate.

In any event, the Magisterium began treating polygynism as a legitimate subject of discussion.

It wasn't saying that polygynism is true, but it was allowing people to debate it.

This Most Holy Synod deliberately teaches this Catholic doctrine, and at the same time admonishes all the sons of the Church that the cult, especially the liturgical cult of the Blessed Virgin, be generously fostered, and the practices and exercises of piety recommended by the Magisterium of the Church toward her in the course of centuries be made of great moment and those decrees which have been given in the early days regarding the cult of images of Christ the Blessed Virgin and the Saints be religiously observed but exhorts theologians and preachers of the divine word to abstain zealously both from all gross exaggerations as well as from petty narrow-mindedness in considering the singular dignity of the mother of God following the study of sacred scripture the Holy Fathers the doctors and liturgy of the church And under the guidance of the church's magisterium, let them rightly illustrate the duties and privileges of the Blessed Virgin, which always look to Christ, the source of all truth, sanctity, and piety.

Let them assiduously keep away from whatever, either by word or deed, could lead separated brethren or any other into error regarding the true doctrine of the church.

Let the faithful remember, moreover, that true devotion consists Part 5.

it must teach clearly about it somewhere else.

So where else does it teach clearly about this issue? And I knew of only one credible answer to that question, which is, the traditions of the Catholic Church, right? Because Catholics think that divine revelation includes not only the written tradition of the Church, which is Scripture, but also the oral traditions of the Church, which are preserved in the teaching of the Catholic Magisterium.

And so now I'm sort of blending together two issues here, right? There's issues having to do with the papacy and then there's issues having to do with revelation.

But I started to see that these were just, they were sort of inextricably linked.
