Magic Sam

So you would just hear it around the house.

Magic Sam and Alan Wolf Hubert, you know, especially Robert Jr. Lockwood and the things that he played on.

Man.

That's a vast influence of people that, you know, interested caught my ear, you know, but hear the records all the time.

I didn't know about Earl Hooker.

I didn't know about Magic Sam.

Even Peter Green, I had never listened to the early Peter Green, you know, and Robert Nighthawk.

So I'm really, really grateful to Ronnie.

But from what I remember... you know, at that time, you know, I felt I played well.

And he was really moved by my playing and that meant the world to me.

I don't know if you can, articulate this but he is definitely one of the great blues guitarists or just great guitarists of our time and to have the opportunity to record with him and to work with him and to tour with him is is an amazing privilege and tell me what you have learned i mean other than him just telling you listen to magic sam listen to you know um earl hooker whoever like Tell me what he has taught you.

And it was very much jazz oriented-

As soon as they introduced Magic Sam, they suddenly said, "Oh, let's go do jazz."

Why not?

I saw Muddy Waters.

I saw m- many people like that, Magic Sam, Hound Dog Taylor, and they were so scary because it was so real and so raw, and they were in their 50s and sometimes 60s, and you're a 19-year-old white boy, and you're watching these Black men do this, and you're, like, scared shitless on some level.

It was like seeing James Brown.

But am- you're totally amazed.

From 1935 to 1948, Born in Chicago on August 27, 1926, Odie Payne Jr. became one of the most respected and influential drummers in blues history.

A key figure in the Chicago blues scene, he performed and recorded with legends including Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Magic Sam, and Buddy Guy.

In the late 1940s, Payne joined Muddy Waters Band and played on classic recordings like Hoochie Coochie Man.

Born on August 28, 1928, L.C. Ulmer was a Delta Blues musician whose career lasted more than 50 years.
