And get a load of that really short delay effect on the drums that creates this unsettling drone underneath it all.

It reminds me of some of the songs on Funkadelic's Maggot Brain, which I can totally imagine this band having been into.

Yeah, that's that's a good comparison.

Okay, so on this show, we've talked a lot about George Clinton and Parliament Folkadelic over the years and that entire world that George Clinton and his crew built.

But today, I want to talk about an album that might be their highest artistic achievement, Maggot Brain from 1971.

Yes.

Westbound Records just reissued a beautiful version of this album on vinyl for all my fellow record collectors.

For listeners who have never heard this album but might be curious about it, how would you describe Maggot Brain?

Absolutely.

Then I can say, um- Funkadelic.

Funkadelic, the, um, masterpiece Maggot Brain.

That's one of the strongest rock albums of its time.

That's why I listen to it and think of, of, hey, Funkadelic is Living Colour, but also a little splash of Led Zeppelin.

I'm your reporter.

This is what I'm gonna give you, and I'm telling you that narrative." When you're doing that with both funk and with heavy rock, you're giving me that That whimsical aspect of just the funk and just hey, we're free, we're doing our own thing, this is what we're bringing to the table but we're gonna take these sounds and just marry them together, and I think it works very well

Well, it worked well because like prime example, I'm gonna have to, I'm going back to it again, Funkadelic Maggot Brain.

Yes.

Okay? But then going back to New York, Jamaica, Queens, my favorite cousin, uh, rest in peace, Byron, he introduced me to a guy named Jimi Hendrix.

And then [laughs] from Jimi Hendrix, Funkadelic, uh, song Maggot Brain.

Then, uh, uh, you know, Hendrix, which was, I think, uh, uh, All Along the Watchtower, then Funkadelic, Maggot Brain, a guy named Eddie Hazel.

Then of course Michael Hampton, who became my hero.

And then [laughs] but this is a story that you, you think I'm making this up, Scott, but this is the true, this is how it went.

So I put the bass down.

I was really into the bass.

Boots is my man, but when I heard All Along the Watchtower, then I heard Maggot Brain, and then of course my cousin introduced me to a couple other things too that we're not gonna talk about [laughs] that kinda expanded my consciousness at that point.
