155. Chiltern Railways returns to public ownership… and it raises some questions
27:41

Richard BowkerHOST
So when you look at this consultation document and get in all the knowledge of every conversation you've been having so far since the Railways Bill was first published, where do, where, where are you? Do you think this is an improvement? Have they listened? Have they not listened? Where, where's your sort of 30,000 foot view of the story so far?
M

It's no surprise we've got some amendments in around some of those points and some other of the clauses [chuckles] that we still aren't very happy with.
M
28:12Maggie SimpsonGUEST
But, uh, as in terms of the access and use policy itself, you know, we've been fortunate that the colleagues at Network Rail who've been writing this have, you know, have been listening to the industry.
M
28:23Maggie SimpsonGUEST
That we, we've had a lot of consultation, a lot of workshops, opportunities to give feedback, you know, and, and that's been, that's been really helpful and, you know, we're very grateful to them for doing that.
M

And I think the, the document that's come out for consultation, we think has got quite a lot of protection for freight in there.

but, you know, we should expect that goods turn up on the shelves and that there's electricity when you flick lights on.
M
4:05Maggie SimpsonGUEST
in your everyday life and it's the success of the freight industry that we don't but that means that people don't see it they don't understand it they think it's like the passenger railway when really it isn't at all like the passenger railway aside from the fact that it's got the same wheels on the same rails you know all its dynamics are very different so making sure that you know a piece of legislation works for both sides is complicated.
M
4:29Maggie SimpsonGUEST
We like the commitment to publishing a rail freight growth target that GBR, Great British Railways, has to have regard to.
M
4:37Maggie SimpsonGUEST
Great British Railways has a statutory duty to promote the interests of freight.

Christian WolmarHOST
So where would you see the growth to kind of make up that? I mean, is it all going to be containers?
