So if we go through kind of some of the approaches, you've got at one end, what people would call cry it out or the extinction method, where a child is put down and the parent doesn't return in response to crying.

And then you've got those approaches that involve time check-ins that are often called controlled crying, where the parent returns at particular timed intervals to then check in with the child.

So you might use gradual retreat, for example, where the parent initially stays very close.
