Mad Max: Fury Road

It's, he just does so many exciting things with moving the camera around and just, you know, giving you that sense of kind of kinetic energy.

Um, and like, yeah, "Fury Road" is kind of like that's the blueprint for me.

So [chuckles] you know, I reckon Miller, I've gotta go Miller.

But I've also gotta give John Woo his flowers, um, even though he's a director that I am less familiar with in terms of his whole filmography.

[chuckles]

I watched "Fury Road" as, uh, back in 2015, because I never understood why they don't do well, because to me, the, they are insane with their action.

I mean, George Miller is on a, is in another realm when he's creating.

So I'm, I'm thrilled that I got a chance to talk to him, and obviously always thrilled to talk to Tom, who is an amazing advocate for this film.

There's also some fun stuff, a little bit of, of Doomsday in there, a little bit of Mad Max talk, because it was recently revealed to me in a previous conversation that Tom auditioned for Mad Max: Fury Road way back when.

So I had to get that story out of him, too, obviously.

Um, all of that and more on this episode.

We finished, we, we'd, you know, we'd wept, and we had, you know, struggled, and she'd left the room and come back and, you know, I'd wept and, and then the exercise was stopped, and, um, George Miller's acting dramaturg said, "Okay, now Tom and Gal, switch lines.

We go again." So I had, "I love you," and she had, "I'm sorry." Yeah, I mean, um-

And maybe Robert Pattinson, even though he's quite great.

Charlize Theron, who's been brilliant in a lot of things, including Mad Max Fury Road.

She's great in this.

So many great performances and so many great actors.

Yeah.

And like you think about like Fury Road, which is the most maximalist movie ever fucking made.

And I don't really have that with Fury Road.

hmm.

I think the story is very, very compelling.

I watched Fury Road, and I didn't love it.

And

I think it's

kind of a similar thing for me as, like, Dunkirk was, where it's kind of plotless in a sense, where, like, Fury Road is literally them going out to deliver or, like, exchange oil and gas for water, and then they try to escape, and they end up driving back, basically, to where they started.

There's not much dialogue there.

That's kind of how Dunkirk was for me the first time.

But Anya Taylor-Joy is really good in it.

been the Ravagers 2.0, that's frustrating.

I haven't seen the entirety of Mad Max Fury Road, but I did hear that they were inspired by Mad Max Fury Road.

And I think I can see that in the movie.

So I think that's why they... maybe chose to visually represent him in a different way.

Because again, I was reading some of the reviews from when the film came out and it was like, oh, it's a cheap ripoff of Mad Max.

Which one? Which one has Mad Max with children running around and stuff like this? Like Mad Max Fury Road, maybe? Not really.

The comparisons to other things, again, feel derivative.

Not allowing a film to exist on its own merits and comparing it to other things and saying, well, it's not as good as Mad Max or it's a ripoff of Mad Max.
