I have a very old gear.

I really work still with an old Mackie mixer.

It's an analog mixer and Mackie 32-8 buss.

And I still like it.

And of course, I have a computer.

But he hasn't raced in quite some time, and I'm kind of curious.

I keep saying I'm going to reach out to Mackie, and I haven't.

I was thinking, you know what? When push comes to shove, they're going to run for this 1,500-meter world record.

They clearly didn't do that.

So sometimes I'll even make my own self think, but it's harder than you get confused.

Like, what do you truly believe? Are you just saying that to get someone to think, or do you really believe it? And John, I kind of, I mean, I almost want to apologize to you.

You've been ripping Kerr, and since I've been texting Mackie this summer, I'm kind of pro-Josh Kerr.

We just set the record straight.

All right, so let's do a quick little recap.

If you tuned in a couple weeks ago, we taught you about Kali LP8 studio monitors, the little Mackie mixer, the Mix 5, and basically a garage sale CD player, a couple cables, and for about $709 US, you've got what I would consider a really nice, And I'm going to use the phrase, a studio-grade playback system.

Is it going to blow your friends away that spent $30,000, $40,000 on their Macintosh Sonos Fabra system? Probably not.

But it's going to deliver music in a very nostalgic way.

Now, the way I'm doing it, source, controller, destination.

Source is my WIEM.

Controller is my Mackie Mix 5.

I know, it's a cheap little toy.

Now, he's back.

No, absolutely not.

Yeah, right.

So Mackie's back.

Look at that.

good experience with my early techno stuff that I would do.

All I had is a Mackie mixer.

And like no dynamics at all.

So I'd spend as long as I could just getting a balance.

That guy's, he's, he's good people.

And, uh, he was moved, he's had Mackie and he was moving on to the newer version of Mackie and he just called me and said, Hey man, I got a good deal for you on this system.

And, uh, and I had done my research and read good things about it.

And we made the switch about a little more than a month ago.

I don't know how to say it, but it's just, we're happy with the

move.

Nothing against QSD, it was good for us, but I think Mackie was a step up.

I can't wait to hear it.

Um, he had, uh, I believe an eight track reel to reel one inch.

He had a Mackie board.

He had, it's funny how I remember these things.

He had like two nice preamps.

It's called the Stage 1, not the Sound 1.

Uh, the ElectroTech Stage 1, uh, the Death Room Above and Death Room Below from Dillinger, and the Mackie Thump G- Pro Go, which is their, uh, or is it just called Mackie Thump Go? I think it's called Pro Go, which is their battery-powered subwoofer and PA system.

They're all very interesting, so go check those out.

Anyway, what came out from that was, um, people saying, "Well, should I buy one?" And it's an interesting question because look, we don't need PA systems as, as DJs.

So you can take the PA system out of your studio, chuck it in the back of your car, it's only small, and it'll work for 20, 30 people or whatever, you know, bars, pubs, and so on.

Uh, Eats Everything, who is a DJ in the UK, actually swears by producing music on a PA system.

I think he's got a Mackie system, uh, or something similar set up in his house, just because he says, "Look, uh, my music's going to be played on a PA system, so I wanna make it on a PA so I can hear what it sounds like." Now, that's a bit extreme, but look, there's an element of that as well.

If you've got a big enough space at home, why not? You know, if you've got a garage, if you've got a basement and you can put some soundproofing in, put a PA in there, set up your DJ gear.

But when you're talking about live setups, it was funny because then after years, you know, when I was playing live, I realized that, okay, well, if I have the computer, then I have compressors and the live set's going to sound good.

And if I don't have the computer and I am just coming raw from like a Mackie mixer output, it's not going to sound very good, especially if you're If a DJ is playing before you and after you, all the power is going to be lost.

You're 10 dB lower than they are.

And that's not even the worst part.

Yeah.

Um, and also like, you know, like a lot of big percussion period that has really big, sharp transients.

So if you are just running these things straight out of a Mackie board, even if you are clipping them a little bit, you're, you're just those, the, the, the transients on the percussion are going to have a in and of themselves, a big dynamic range.

And so you're going to wind up with stuff that sounds thin instead of punchy.
