M249 Squad Automatic Weapon

They're meant to be run with a belt.

And that was the light machine gun for the Marine Corps infantry, the M249 saw.

Again, I don't think they were very well liked, mostly because of their lack of reliability.

Now, maybe some saw gunner might disagree with that, but I think they do have a reputation for being quite finicky.

Its road system was as memorable as the gun.

The cannon rode between two specially designed three hundred seventy-five horsepower tractors, the M249 at the front and the M250 at the rear, both capable of independent steering.

In motion, the whole assembly looked like a military fire engine stretched to absurd length, able to travel about thirty-five miles per hour on decent roads and negotiate sharp turns only because drivers at both ends could help steer the machine around them.

Once on site, the crew lowered the cannon from its transporters onto a circular firing base, used hydraulic gear to set and load it, and could bring it into or out of firing position in about fifteen minutes.

I was a machine gunner when I first went into the Marine Corps.

So the first four years, I shot the .50 caliber machine gun, the Mark 19 machine gun, and all of the lesser guns as well, the M60, the M249 SAW, and all of the other weapons as well.

while i can appreciate the spirit and i think that there's a mentality there that you know hey we have respect for the old ways and we can still bring some of those successful parts over while changing and adapting for the future i think that there's something honorable about that but outright rejecting the system sure i mean if you're okay with 51 and 10 losses that that's at least you have your pride you know i i think that you kind of have to give up a little bit of that and understand that the the the shifting sands are never going to offer a solid foundation
