Many years ago, I purchased his book, The Stubborn Fat Solution, and I was fascinated by the mechanisms that seem to control whether fat is released from certain cells or isn't, and I loved learning about his various protocols as well as just the science behind body fat that seems to be harder to get rid of than other areas.

And, you know, our moms were all eating cottage cheese and lettuce cups and stuff like that.
Lisa JedanHOST
45:16
But Aoife, you shared a podcast with me featuring a gentleman named Lyle McDonald, who is a very well-known researcher and coach who has worked with bodybuilders and athletes.
Lisa JedanHOST
45:26
He's also the author of The Woman's Book, where he did this deep dive on women's unique physio- physiology as it relates to weight gain, um, sorry, muscle gain, diet, and fat loss.

And it w- all aimed at how women can optimize and, and live longer.

We really got to delve deeply into so many topics that I am obsessed with, especially stubborn body fat and what we can do about it.

Vanessa SpinaHOST

It's wonderful to have you here with us.
Andy BakerGUEST
17:16
And here's the other thing.
Andy BakerGUEST
17:18
Lyle McDonald has, has asked this a lot, and I think it's a good question, which is, 'cause he recognizes that it has some validity, as do I, and I think this is a good question as like a, as a broader community, is i- everybody tends to think of how much volume do we need? How many sets and reps do we need for, you know, to stimulate progress? And the better question is, how many effective reps do we need over the course of a workout or the course of a week? And I don't think there's a lot of agreement on that.
Andy BakerGUEST
17:42
And I think beginners, intermediates, and advanced people probably wind up getting about the same amount, but they get there differently.
Andy BakerGUEST
17:49
So that's part of the reason, you know, if it's a, if it's a five, a, a true five from a more intermediate to advanced trainee, if a true five rep max, by definition, you can't repeat that for another two sets.
Brandon DeCruzHOST
47:11
Yeah, I think it's very interesting when someone I think there's almost the assumption that most people, even if they put a citation, most people reading the article are not going to click on it.
Brandon DeCruzHOST
47:20
People like you and I, a good friend of mine, Lyle McDonald, goes through every single citation that anyone claims.
Brandon DeCruzHOST
47:25
And he calls these things out all the time.
Brandon DeCruzHOST
47:26
And they're often in my inbox.

Brandon DeCruzHOST
58:10
No, it's super fascinating, especially when you disentangle these things and you present the evidence.
Brandon DeCruzHOST
58:14
And here would be the thing, if you have physiological rationale, where you have hypotheses, there's many people, I'll give you a great example.
Brandon DeCruzHOST
58:21
Lyle McDonald is a good friend of mine.
Brandon DeCruzHOST
58:22
And there was many things that before the data broke out on it, I'll give you a great example.
Jeff HaineHOST
21:51
So again, this would be a calorie cycling approach, intermittent modified fasting diets.
Jeff HaineHOST
21:57
Lyle McDonald talks about this.
Jeff HaineHOST
21:58
Again, you're going to have some higher output days, higher calorie days.
Jeff HaineHOST
22:02
with some days that your calories are a bit lower.
Dan JohnHOST
23:39
And of course, some really good books.
Dan JohnHOST
23:40
I almost forgot, Lyle McDonald.
Dan JohnHOST
23:42
I mean, I can pick up the phone and call Lyle if I misunderstand something, and he'll give me a dissertation of explanation.
Dan JohnHOST
23:49
I really appreciate that.
Brandon DaCruzGUEST
28:21
And then if we kind of go and transition to rapid fat loss.
Brandon DaCruzGUEST
28:25
Rapid fat loss was developed by a friend of mine named Lyle McDonald.
Brandon DaCruzGUEST
28:28
He wrote about this in 2005 and he was kind of the one that brought this to the forefront.
Brandon DaCruzGUEST
28:31
If you guys are interested, please go back to Chasing Clarity.
MirceaGUEST
21:05
It doesn't do much in males, but in females it's actually been shown to improve natural testosterone levels.
MirceaGUEST
21:13
And strangely enough, and Lyle McDonald is the one who actually formulated this the best, improves the intramuscular testosterone levels or androgen levels, which barely seep into the bloodstream if you're not going crazy with the dosage of DHEA.
MirceaGUEST
21:29
So that's kind of a pretty interesting combination to use kind of in that off period.
MirceaGUEST
21:35
DHEA, creatine, clonidrol, and some GH.
