Lust for Life

As, you know, or you can be compelled to create.

You know, in my mind, what is it in Vince, Lust for Life, right? Kirk Douglas, as Vincent Van Gogh, you know, yelling out at Paul Gauguin, I've got to paint! Do you know, I've used that line for years and then I rewatched it and he never says that.

But for years, I've told people that Kirk Douglas yells that line at Paul Gauguin.

And I think just because of his performance in Lust for Life.

What does he say?

Well, there's no equivalent.

... his great book, The Agony and the Ecstasy, about Michelangelo.

But he also writes a book about Vincent van Gogh called Lust for Life, which in the 1950s gets made into a film with Kirk Douglas.

And then in the 1970s, it- Don McLean is writing pop songs about Vincent van Gogh.

And he becomes a kind of great commercial, commodified cash cow, doesn't he?

You know, he made some brilliant films, Spartacus and, you know...

He really wanted to play McMurphy, and he took it on stage, and he had a brilliant cast because he had people with him like Gene Wilder.
