Lupe Vélez

"Long-haired men, their faces covered with rouge and their eyelids dripping mascara, came swooshing out of the cells garbed in filmy feminine underthings.

They identified themselves under such pseudonyms as Jean Harlow, Lupe Velez, Greta Garbo, Madame Butterfly, Wanda Holley, Kitty Darling, and Marilyn Miller.

The latter was the acknowledged queen of the tier.

Except for the flapping trousers beneath the pink chemise and the muscular bare arms, he would've easily have been taken for the woman he claimed to be.

Yes.

We are back with part three of Lupe Velez.

This is the, this is the final installment in this series.

Finally, we're here.

We're here.

As last time, my main source for this episode is the book Strictly Dynamite: The Sensational Life of Lupe Velez by Eve Golden.

I also read some newspaper articles from the past.

Hmm.

And it was backed by the powerful Shuberts, whose largesse had kept American theater alive during The Depression.

Michelle Vogel, in a biography of You Never Know costar Lupe Velez, calls the show seemingly cursed.

One example of the curse in action, while he was working on songs for the show, Cole Porter was thrown from a horse and then stepped on by said horse, an accident which left the composer partially paralyzed.

Reportedly, before help could arrive, Porter lay immobile and reached into his pocket for a pencil and paper to touch up the lyrics for one of the songs in You Never Know, At Long Last Love.

That song would be sung in the show by Webb.

Libby was cursed, if you can call it that, by not having a gold standard song to sing in You Never Know.

The other certified Porter banger, From Alpha to Omega, was sung by Webb and Lupe Velez.

And apparently, Lupe and Libby felt cursed to be forced to work together.
