At the mouth of the Bristol Channel, off the pleasant western English shore, fighting as it were with the long white waves of the Atlantic, and with its lighthouse warning the mariner to give it ample range, stands the lonely little island of Lundy, between Devon on the south and the coast of Wales on the north, while from the island's granite cliffs, looking towards the western horizon, stretches the open Atlantic.

It is a very little place, only three and a half miles in length by an average of one half mile in width, and of an extreme altitude of a trifle over five hundred feet.

Today, we're crossing the Bristol Channel to Lundy Island to meet the people who spend their days counting cabbages and to find out why.

As you can see, we are approaching Lundy.

It is essential that all passengers remain where they are, keeping clear of the gangway until the ship is secure alongside.

If you're looking for white sandy beaches and a bustling nightlife, you've come to the wrong place.

Hello and a very happy Tuesday morning.

Not so happy at the moment because I'm sitting on my little single bed in my home here on Lundy, Stoneycroft, a little two-bedroom cottage which has served my son and I really beautifully the three nights we've been here.

And in some ways it was one night too many.

I think we both felt, gosh, it's quite an isolated place to stay away from the family and in a sort of mother and son situation.

So I'm going to do that now.

Right.

As a teenager, I was invited by my friend to stay on Lundy through the summer holidays to work voluntarily for the Landmark Trust in return for food and accommodation.

My friend's father used to live in a room high up in the old light, a lighthouse on Beacon Hill, the highest part of the island, and his uncle actually used to own the island itself and I know, of course, that Hedley must know Lucy.

It'll give me an idea of how popular it is.

But there's been a change of plan because we're going to Lundy today

boat is planning to leave at eight.

So that's what we're going to do.

I'm travelling to Lundy and I'm now zipping about Sherbourne town, getting cash and sorting out other things.
