Now, who was in charge of this whole outfit? The story of Haymarket has a very large and diffuse cast, but it runs through three people above everyone else, really.

Albert and Lucy Parsons and Auguste Spies.

Albert Parsons was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1848 and enlisted in the Confederate Army at 13.

By his own description, a boy who had caught war fever and run away from his guardian to join his older brother's unit before it was too late.

He was shot in the leg, beaten up a lot of times, and thrown down a staircase, threatened with lynching.

When the Democratic Party retook the Texas legislature in 1873 and Reconstruction in the state collapsed, Parsons and his wife Lucy left for Chicago.

Now, Lucy Parsons is one of my favorite historical figures, and almost nothing about where she comes from is certain.

She claimed Mexican and Native American ancestry.
