I think just the maturity, the mature outlook of dealing with like loss or pain and heartbreak, which isn't surprising if you're influenced by Lucinda Williams or the War on Drugs or some of the people you've been talking about, the freedom to explore that subject matter.

But I mean, it was obviously really real for you.

Just, I was like, I just referenced a story about Dublin that, which kind of just takes you back a little bit.

But I, when that was the end of the tour of that acoustic tour, we came home and did the arena tour with him and lucinda williams but before end of the acoustic tour we entered in dublin and um i'd been on a bookshop ban um because i buy too many books on tour and then i like

but you have to get them home and you have to get

them home and i was on tour for 10 weeks and i was like i can't start buying books in week one two three because like i will it'll be joke um And so I'd been on a bookshop then except for Dublin.

So...

I interviewed Lucinda Williams a couple of months ago, and she said something that I think is related to this.

She said that she can write about dark things, but she has to be in a content, happy place to write about those things.

Yeah, that's what I wish I said in my press release.

I'm like, shit, everyone's going to think my album's like, everything is perfect.

But let's explore that because how do you do that? I mean, I think for some people they need to be in that moment to write about it.

Um, but it sounds like for you, you're more along Lucinda Williams train of thought.

Well, I think it's like kind of two different ways of brain works is like, I think, um, I don't really, I can't really process things until after it happens.

And then I wrote Lone Mountain Serenade, my first record.

And that's mostly because of Wilco, Tom Petty, and Lucinda Williams, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.

That's where my brain was at, and it's still there.

I still fucking love Alt Country.

It wasn't Alison Crouse.

Was it Lucinda Williams? Yes, it was.

Very good.

And so I'll Fly Away is kind of like the Don't Fear the Reaper.

I think it's a perfect representation.

And I got to see some killer bands and I went to the Ryman Auditorium and these are all places I'd heard of while I was kind of into country music.

when I was listening to John Prine and like, kind of what I was alluding to earlier, when I was getting into those kind of acts, like Lucinda Williams, people like that, like these are the kind of venues that I'd heard about.

Yeah, it was definitely a cool experience.

I didn't really have much experience in the Chicago music scene.
