Accompanied by two companions, Maurice Mpolo, the youth and sports minister, and the Senate Vice President, Joseph Okito, Lumumba was bundled onto a plane heading for the Belgian stronghold of Katanga, and along with his comrades, was so severely beaten by members of the Luba tribe, eager to exact revenge for the slaughter of their kinsmen in South Kasai- that the Belgian air crew had to shut themselves up in the cockpit to drown out the noise.

Landing at Luano Airport in Lubumbashi, he was tortured and assaulted for hours by Katanga leaders and Belgian officers, shot by execution squad, and then in the final grisly step, his body was dissolved in acid.
