hey there and welcome back to the shakedown archives tonight we're spending the whole night with one record a grateful dead album from the late seventies made in the band's own rehearsal room in san rafael north of the bridge with a guest at the mixing desk who had his own band to worry about His name was Lowell George, and the record was called Shakedown Street.

For a stretch near the end of the 60s, he played in Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention alongside a bassist named Roy Estrada, and there is a story about how that ended.

Legend has it that Lowell brought Zappa a song he had written, called Willen, and Zappa decided it was not right for the mothers, and told Lowell he ought to start a band of his own to play it.
