In the 2010s, Frontier went all in on the budget airline model.

Frontier Airlines is one of these low-cost airlines.

Their ticker symbol is actually ULCC, ultra-low-cost carrier.

Well, j- j- let me just explain how, how low-cost airlines work in terms of, and what, how Ryanair have really transformed the low-cost sector in Europe, in that when you fly from, um, let's say you're flying from Manchester, um, to Frankfurt Hahn, which is one of their bases, um, the, the, Frankfurt Hahn will charge Ryanair a fixed amount for every passenger it lands there.

Now, Frankfurt main airport is, is quite expensive per passenger.

Frankfurt Hahn is significantly cheaper.

But yeah, let's skip low flybys.

Sticking with some good news on another South African carrier, and I can't believe they haven't won this award before, but I see FlySafe is named the leading low-cost airline in Africa.

And yeah, that was the first time in that category.

I would have thought they would have won that many times before because surely they've been With their on-time record, I can't believe they haven't won it before.

It's one of those secondary cities that has seen explosive growth in both business and leisure travel.

The question that every airline analyst is going to ask and that every pilot who flies for Southwest or has friends who do will be thinking about is does this work? Can a low-cost carrier add premium amenities without undermining the cost discipline that made it profitable in the first place? The honest answer is, nobody knows yet.

But the pressure to try comes from a few different directions.

First, there's the competitive environment.

Whether those lounges will be accessible through card partnerships, status programs, or day passes is something they haven't fully announced yet, worth watching.

What you're watching with Southwest is a compression of the distinction between low-cost carriers and legacy carriers.

Budget airlines are one of those modern travel inventions that promise freedom, then immediately ask you to prove your devotion in fees, measurements and emotional restraint.

They are brilliant when they work, infuriating when they don't, and somehow always make a person feel like they should have packed less, planned more, and known in advance what priority boarding actually means.

For the solo traveller, though, budget airlines are not a moral failing.

They are simply a system with rules, traps and occasional bargains, and once you understand the game, they become much less mysterious.

The first thing to know is that budget airlines are cheap in the same way a free sample is cheap.

The headline price is only the beginning.

The real cost often appears in luggage fees, seat selection, airport transfers, card charges and the small print that seems to have been written by someone who enjoys surprise.
