During the next three years, he released an album each year with 1976's Naked and Warm, 1977's Menagerie, and 1978's 'Bout Love.

The leadoff track on Menagerie was the song "Lovely Day." Released as a single in late 1977, "Lovely Day" became his fifth Top 40 hit, reaching number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In early 1978, it peaked at number six on the Billboard R&B chart and number seven on the UK Singles Chart.

In 2021, the song was listed at number 402 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Best Songs of All Time.

Interestingly, at the 3:06 mark of "Lovely Day," Withers holds a sustained note that, at 18 seconds, is the longest of any Top 40 hit in the United States.
