i think it's quite an important trend actually within magic in the contemporary world of it being less aggressive um more consensual almost it made me think when you're describing that and about that approach to spiritual beings it made me think about the you know i did when i was researching for for this book i i I did some reading through spell books, magical manuals and things about love magic in the present.

You know, love magic is, you know, you think about what are the great themes in the history of magic, especially the history of common magic.

It's, you know, it's one of the great themes in life.

I mean, first of all, people want to stay safe and be protected.

That's the main thing.

And then second, after that, what's the big wonderful thing about life is love.

Love magic is a huge and enduring theme in magical practice across the cultures and the history of the world.

And today we are focusing mostly on Marion's new book, Witchland: A Tale of Witch Hunting and War in 17th Century Britain, a book which I had the great pleasure of reading in advance of its publication, and boy, is it interesting.

Researched in partnership with the brilliant Tabitha Stanmore, author of Cunning Folk: Life in the Era of Practical Magic and Love Spells, and Lost Treasure: Service Magic in England From the Later Middle Ages to the Early Modern Era.

Witchland is pretty ambitious.

It offers readers both a history of the English Civil War and, as a product of months of digging through county archives, never before discussed histories of several individual everyday folk accused of witchcraft from Scotland and East Anglia down into Devon and Cornwall.

Specifically, we can divide ancient Christian magic in this period into either Coptic or Greek texts, and then we can further subdivide them into the various spell types.

That is to say we can look at healing spells, protective spells, erotic magic or love magic, cursing, and then a kind of miscellaneous grab bag of various magical spells that have been recovered from this ancient period.

What typically separates these spells from the other spells collected in the vast collection of the Greek magical papyri is that these are almost always overtly Christian, either in symbolism, in language, or by virtue of the fact that we can be fairly confident that the practitioners of these magic were specifically Christian.

So we have those images being invoked in the spell, along with a clear invocation of Jesus.

Again, this spell isn't terribly complicated, but what it does show is a wide variety of Christian imagery and Christian motifs being used alongside of more typical magical motifs, like the Sator word square being incorporated into a unified kind of Christian magic, which again is helping to heal this person.

Of course, love magic or erotic binding magic was just as common in the ancient world as it is in the modern world, Notice I call it erotic binding magic because it's not really love that we're dealing with here.

If you're being magically compelled to love someone or to have sex with them, you don't exactly have consent.

So, so if somebody says, "Well, I don't know how to determine if it's coming from my heart space," right? 'Cause I've heard that before, because I teach several different classes, and I, I don't remember what class it was.

It, it was probably, I have a, a class called Love Magic, and like it's a two-hour class, but the first hour 15 is about self-love, right? Like it's mostly about self-love, and then we get into the spicy stuff.
