Love Family

And like most communes, once you've looked at the history of a few of them, um, they fall prey to the same things that, you know, regular Um, human organizations fall prey to, and that is almost always some form of, of abuse of power.

And so the commune I was in was called the Love Family, and it was founded by and led by a guy who called himself Love Israel.

And, um, it was kind of a cri- Judaic Christian, you know, commune/cult and kind of a bit of an Old Testament kind of thing.

Um, all the men had long hair and long beards, and everyone wore ro- wore robes and, you know, back to the land, uh, free love.

But, you know, some people, Love in particular, got a lot of access to women and got all the assets of people who joined the, the commune, uh, that he controlled, and he used a lot of that to buy cocaine and have parties.

And so surprise, power corrupts, you know.

This is all a story in the book, right? And so I do have a chapter called "What the Hippies Got Wrong," and I first, you know, talk about, um, the Love Family and Love Israel's, um, failures, which were many.
