Louisine Havemeyer

So she gives it to Edgar Degas in 1886, and he loves it, and he hangs it in his living room, and it's in his living room when he dies in 1917.

And then from his sale, Louisine Havemeyer, the great suffragist, but also the wife of H.O. Havemeyer, together they built the great Impressionist collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

She buys it.

And then when she dies, Chester Dale buys it, our great founder of our collection here.

We don't know the exact date when Degas made this drawing, nor how it obtained its title.

We do know that it entered the collection of the great patron of impressionism, Louisine Havemeyer, a feminist and philanthropist, about 10 years after Degas made it.

It stayed in the Havemeyer family's collection for 90 years, until it was jointly purchased by the Getty and the Norton Simon Foundation.

The subject matter of this drawing is rather elusive.
