... and has that kind of compressed, stringent, poetic quality, I think of Louise Glück, the American Nobel laureate, and her intensely cerebral poems that are almost always also about the body.

I spoke about it in another talk maybe a month or two ago.

Uh, a poem by Louise Glück, you know, 2020 Nobel Prize winner in Literature, and the poem, uh, is entitled "From the Japanese." Do you know this, Jenny? It's like, it's a hard poem.

It's very inaccessible to me.

[laughs] But there are two lines that, like, just stop me, and here are the two lines.

This was about five years ago in 2019 or so, 2020.

Um, and, you know, found the same kind of things going on just sort of more openly and everywhere, you know, you know, it's just the, um, the, the, um, Robert Pinsky to Carl Phillips line and the, you know, and Louise Gluck swirling around that, you know, poets being on the award committee that nominates the poet for the award and then switching around vice versa.

And there's a lot more, um, There's a lot, it's like, it's, it's more open, it's less opaque.

So you'll have like, you know, a group of people, um, selecting, you don't know which one, like which connection actually made the connection because it's like a group of like six people deciding the award.

Mm-hmm.

To, you know, quote a, a great friend of his, Louise Glück, and, uh, she once said that that's why she wrote poems-

... because she wanted experience to have meaning.

Oh, really? And I was sent back, yeah.

But anyway, so I decided to do the translation to write, you know, I started translating Louise Gluck, Wild Iris, from English into Chinese.

Also because Nankai University was inviting me to do a lecture on Louise Brooke.

So I started translating her poetry.
