Lost Girls

This includes I'll Be Gone in the Dark, a six-part HBO series about the true crime writer Michelle McNamara and the hunt for the Golden State Killer, and last year's Gone Girls, the Long Island serial killer, a three-part series for Netflix.

In 2020, there was Lost Girls, Garbus' first fiction feature film, a mystery drama starring Amy Ryan and Thomasin McKenzie, which was also based on the then-unsolved case of the Long Island serial killer.

But instead of focusing on the killer himself, or even the police investigation, Garbs' film chose to tell the story of the murdered women's grieving family members, their mothers and sisters, who found solace in each other and became unrelenting in their drive to pursue justice.

I asked Liz why, after such a long career in documentary, it was a serial killer story that she chose for her narrative film debut.

I felt

like to live with them as opposed to hearing the telling of the story was the most powerful way to address that.

You've described Lost Girls as anti-true crime and also the anti-serial killer procedural.

I wondered if you could expand a bit more on what you meant by that.

But it was adapted, which is pretty cool.

She had some other interesting history.

I hope I'm okay bringing this up, but a couple of years ago, I read The Lost Girls about the Gilgo Beach Murders.
