Lonsdale Street

Outside the little Collins corner creperie there are queues for dessert and bothered faces, Frenchmen flipping their fires hot, and I'm tempted by a sweet treat on this sour night on the town.

At the corner of lonely Lonsdale Street, a scrawny bloke shivers on the ground.

He's missing a shirt and a right arm.

Why, are people with missing limbs living on the street? Don't you think that's all kinds of evil? Why are any of these people living on the street on any sad night in any sad town? I wander aimless past the big old church where someone's pissing on God's red door and the pissy yellow glow of a street lamp, and I decide there and then, life is horrible.

What does the morning look like? Because I will be in the city on that day.

This, uh, 10-year-old boy was actually in Melbourne seeking treatment or getting treatment for brain cancer with his two siblings and their mother.

And what seemingly a random attack occurred at the north end of Spencer Street up near, I think it was Lonsdale Street.

Uh, the boy was allegedly punched.

The mother was allegedly stabbed in the back of the neck with a pair of scissors.

And I rang Robert up, and I said, "I just want to let you know that a lot of these calls that are said to have been made as part of this import couldn't have been made by him." And I talk him through a few, and he goes, "I want you to drop everything.

Bring this folder to my office now." And I said, "Okay." [laughs] So I ran up the hill, [laughs] Lonsdale Street, and I showed him all my highlighted notes.

And he goes, "This is brilliant.

This is exactly what we need." So that was, for me, the moment where I went, "I love criminal law.

There's no way.

He didn't have a contraband phone or anything on him.

It may even have been an underground laboratory.

Under Punt Road, there's a tunnel from a wartime spy base, now the police college, to the German Consulate.

It's rumored to have been a listening post.

There are reports that a tiny mail train like this one in London ran from the GPO to the Lonsdale Street mail exchange.

And below the bustle of Southern Cross Station, a tunnel which once ran beneath Spencer Street.
