Meanwhile, on the road west, Sanzang and company were sitting and waiting with the local earth spirit.

Dashing back to the rest of the party, Wukong shouted, Turn back! Turn back! The fire is coming this way! Sanzang hurriedly climbed back into the saddle and fled a good six or seven miles back the way he came, with Zhu Bajie and Sha Zheng following, before they were able to stop and catch their breaths.

Wu Kong, what happened? Sanzang asked.
